This chapter explores the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in blended learning environments to enhance student engagement through the lenses of three foundational educational theories: constructivism, connectivism, and social constructivism. GenAI holds transformative potential for educational practices by offering personalized learning experiences, real-time feedback, and culturally responsive collaborative activities. Within constructivist frameworks, AI-powered virtual tutors facilitate hands-on exploration and adaptive feedback, fostering active knowledge construction. Connectivist approaches leverage AI recommendation systems and collaborative tools, aiding students in navigating complex information landscapes and building knowledge networks. From a social constructivist perspective, GenAI fosters inclusive, interactive learning by enhancing cultural relevance and supporting diverse peer interactions. This chapter also addresses ethical considerations crucial to the equitable use of AI in education, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the digital divide. We discuss strategies for designing and implementing GenAI systems that prioritize fairness, inclusivity, and accessibility to support students across varied contexts. By examining GenAI’s applications within these theoretical frameworks and considering potential ethical challenges, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of how AI technologies can enrich blended learning environments and foster deeper engagement, cognitive development, and higher-order thinking skills. Through thoughtful application and continuous evaluation, GenAI can play a pivotal role in creating dynamic, inclusive educational experiences that cater to diverse learning needs and preferences.
