The losses in the successive wars fought by the Ottoman Empire in the first quarter of the 20th century were not limited to soldiers fighting on the front lines. The civilian population behind the front lines also suffered serious hardship; as a result of the destructive effects of war, a large number of orphaned and abandoned children were left behind. Consequently, the idea of integrating war-affected children who were in need of protection into society came to the fore, paving the way for the establishment of various social institutions. Services for children in need of protection were clearly identified during the National Struggle period, and similar initiatives were resolutely continued during the Republican period. Within the framework of the activities of the Turkish Associations, the Orphanage and Art School established in Ayvalık are examples of such social service institutions of the Republican period. This study will focus on the establishment of the Ayvalık Orphanage and Art School, as well as the activities and assistance provided to the children residing in the orphanage. The Ayvalık Newspaper was used as the primary source for this research, while archival documents and other studies were also utilized.
