The effect of basic geometric drawings using a compass-ruler on the geometric thinking levels and attitudes of the pre-service teachers

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of basic geometric drawings using a compass-ruler on the geometric thinking levels and attitudes towards mathematics of pre-service teachers. It was also examined whether this effect showed a significant reletionship by gender and grade. The study adopted single group pre-test and post-test experimental design was carried out with 72 pre-service teachers studying at Secondary Science and Mathematics Education-Mathematics Education department in the spring semester of the 2013- 2014 academic year. In the applications performed 2 hours per week in 5 weeks, the research data was obtained by the Van Hiele Geometric Thinking Levels Test developed by Usiskin (1982) and adopted to Turkish by Duatepe (2000) and The Scale Of Attitudes Towards The Mathematics developed by Aşkar (1986). At the end of the study, the basic geometric drawings produced by using a pair of compass and a ruler improved the pre-service teachers’ geometrical thinking levels and attitudes towards mathematics.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, öğretmen adaylarının pergel-cetvel kullanarak gerçekleştirdikleri temel geometrik çizim uygulamalarının geometrik düşünme düzeylerine ve matematiğe yönelik tutumlarına etkisini incelemektir. Çalışmada ayrıca bu etkinin cinsiyete ve sınıf düzeyine göre anlamlı farklılık gösterip göstermediği araştırılmıştır. Deneysel desenlerden tek grup ön test- son test deneysel desen benimsenen çalışma, 2013-2014 eğitim öğretim yılı bahar yarıyılı Ortaöğretim Fen ve Matematik Alanlar EğitimiMatematik Öğretmenliği bölümünde öğrenim gören 72 öğretmen adayı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Haftada 2 saat olmak üzere 5 haftada gerçekleştirilen uygulamalarda araştırma verileri, Usiskin (1982) tarafından geliştirilen ve Duatepe (2000) tarafından Türkçe’ye uyarlanan Van Hiele Geometrik Düşünme Düzeyleri Testi ve Aşkar (1986) tarafından geliştirilen Matematiğe Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği ile edinilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonunda pergel-cetvel kullanarak gerçekleştirilen temel geometrik çizim uygulamalarının öğretmen adaylarının geometrik düşünme düzeylerini ve matematiğe yönelik tutumlarını arttırdığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
