Cognitive structures of students about cancer: Word association test

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine ninth grade students’ cognitive structures related to cancer. The descriptive survey model was used in the study. The study group consisted of 50 ninth grade students studying in a vocational high school in the Marmara region in Turkey in the 2019-2020 academic year. Data were collected by independent word association test and were analyzed according to the content analysis technique. According to the results of the study, the students produced 265 words under eighth themes and 80 sub-themes related to cancer. These themes were: Cancer definition (13), cancer symptoms (17), cancer causes (20), cancer types (61), cancer results (39), cancer treatment (85), ways to prevent cancer (2), perceptions towards cancer (28). The meaningful sentences (36) that students wrote about cancer were collected under seven themes: Cancer definition (8), cancer causes (4), cancer types (2), cancer results (6), cancer treatment (8), ways to prevent cancer (3), perceptions towards cancer (5). As a result, the students produced words related to the themes of cancer treatment, cancer types and cancer results mostly, while the students wrote sentences related to the themes of cancer definition, cancer treatment and cancer results.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, dokuzuncu sınıf öğrencilerinin kanser kavramı ile ilgili bilişsel yapılarını belirlenmesidir. Çalışmada, betimsel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu, 2019-2020 eğitim-öğretim yılında Marmara bölgesinde (Türkiye) bulunan bir meslek lisesinde öğrenim gören 50 dokuzuncu sınıf öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, bağımsız kelime ilişkilendirme testi ile toplanmıştır. Veriler, içerik analizi tekniğine göre analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonuçlarına göre, öğrencilerin kanserle ilgili sekiz tema ve 80 alt tema altında 265 kelime ürettikleri belirlenmiştir. Çalışmada elde edilen temalar şunlardır: Kanser tanımı (13), kanser belirtileri (17), kanser sebepleri (20), kanser çeşitleri (61), kanser sonuçları (39), kanser tedavisi (85), kanserden korunma yolları (2), kansere yönelik algılar (28). Öğrencilerin kanser kavramıyla ilişkili yazdıkları anlamlı cümleler (36) yedi tema altında toplanmıştır: Kanser tanımı (8), kanser sebepleri (4), kanser çeşitleri (2), kanser sonuçları (6), kanser tedavisi (8), kanserden korunma yolları (3), kansere yönelik algılar (5). Sonuç olarak, öğrencilerin en çok kanser tedavisi, kanser çeşitleri ve kanser sonuçları temaları ile ilgili kelime ürettikleri gözlenirken, öğrencilerin en çok kanser tanımı, kanser tedavisi ve kanser sonuçları temaları ile ilgili cümleler kurdukları belirlenmiştir.
