Experimental pursuit on printmaking and atelier 17

Abstract

In addition to experiments, discoveries and inventions that shape the structures of societies, technology is one of the main factors in the formation of contemporary art. With the reality that every innovation emerges as a result of a search, technology differentiates the materials and the tools used and determines the path to the result. It is this understanding that pushes the artist to new-experimental searches in the artistic production process. Printmaking, one of the ways of artistic production allowing the junction of the traditional and the contemporary by combining both old and new technologies, is eminently amenable to an expermental search. British artist S. William Hayter, one of the pioneers of this search, is the founder of Atelier 17 in which experimental practices have been allowed. Atelier 17 in which artists have been encouraged to distinctive pursuits has an important role in forming the search of Experimental Printmaking today as a place where the presence of thought has been felt and perceived. In this paper, it is discussed the importance of Atelier 17 having so many contributions that is incontrovertible when considering the Art of Printmaking today, and the realm of new quests that have been always remained unchanged despite of the changes taking shape with curiosity, looking for the new and shifting rapidly.

Toplumların yapılarını şekillendiren deneyler, keşifler ve buluşların yanı sıra günümüz sanatının oluşumunda baş etmenlerden biri teknolojidir. Her yeniliğin bir arayış sonucu ortaya çıktığı gerçekliği ile teknoloji; malzemeyi ve kullanılan araçları farklılaştırarak, sonuca giden yolda belirleyici olmaktadır. Sanatçıyı da, sanatsal üretim sürecinde yeni-deneysel arayışlara iten bu anlayıştır. Eski ve yeni teknolojileri bir araya getirerek geleneksel ve çağdaşın buluşmasına olanak veren sanatsal üretim yöntemlerinden biri olan Baskıresim, deneysel arayışlara fazlasıyla yatkındır. Bu arayışların mimarlarından İngiliz sanatçı S. William Hayter, deneysel uygulamalara olanak veren Atölye 17’nin kurucusudur. Sanatçıların farklı arayışlara teşvik edildiği Atölye 17, düşüncenin varlığının hissedildiği bir yer olarak, günümüz Deneysel Baskıresim anlayışının şekillenmesinde önemli bir role sahiptir. Bu çalışmada; Günümüz Baskıresim Sanatı değerlendirildiğinde katkısı yadsınamayacak olan Atölye17’nin önemi ve merakla şekillenen, yeniyi arayan, hızla değişen ve değişime rağmen değişmeyen yeni arayışların dünyası ele alınmaktadır.
