The concept of the external spirit in Turkish folklore

Abstract

The concept of the external spirit has first been used by James Frazer. Frazer has pointed out that usually the spirits of giants and heroes in fairy tales are located externally, in a different place or being. Such figures' death is only possible through the death of their spirits, which requires identifying the external location of the spirit. This study focuses on the concept of the external spirit in Turkish folklore, especially within the context of death rituals and beliefs, by analyzing a variety of sample texts. Through such analysis, the study aims to make a comparative assessment of beliefs and practices that have survived since ancient times to this day.Dış ruh kavramı ilk defa James Frazer tarafından kullanılmış bir kavram olarak bilinmektedir. Frazer özellikle masallarda devlerin, kahramanların ruhlarının farklı yerlerde, farklı varlıklarda yer aldığını; dolayısıyla ölmeleri için ruhun bulunduğu yerin veya varlığın tespiti ve öncelikle onun öldürülmesi gereğine işaret etmiştir. Bu çalışmada özellikle ölüm adet ve inanışları bağlamında Türk folklorunda dış ruh tasarımı ve anlayışı üzerinde durulup örnek metin ve uygulamalardaki yeri belirlenmiştir. Bu şekilde eski dönemlerden bugüne ulaşan inanç ve uygulamaları mukayeseli biçimde tespit ve değerlendirme amaçlanmıştır.
