Kırılganlık ve güç arasında: Kiki Smith’in sanatında beden, doğa ve toplumsal cinsiyet

Abstract

Bu çalışma, çağdaş sanatın önemli temsilcilerinden Kiki Smith’in eserlerini, feminist estetik bağlamında ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, Smith’in özellikle beden politikası, toplumsal cinsiyet ve insan doğası temalarını nasıl yorumladığı ve sanatına yansıttığı incelenmiştir. Smith’in eserleri, kadın bedeninin estetik, politik ve toplumsal bağlamlardaki temsillerini sorgularken, aynı zamanda toplumsal normlara eleştirel bir bakış sunar. Araştırmanın problemi, Smith’in sanatının feminist estetiğin tanımlayıcı unsurlarını nasıl içerdiği ve genişlettiği üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Çalışma, sanatçının Blood Pool, Pee Body ve Digestive System gibi eserlerinde, malzeme ve formun feminist bir ifade aracı olarak nasıl kullanıldığını analiz etmektedir. Ayrıca, sanatçının doğal dünya, mitoloji ve insan kırılganlığı gibi konuları feminist bir perspektifle nasıl birleştirdiği irdelenmiştir. Sanatında önemli yere sahip olan baskıresimleri de feminist estetik bağlamında incelenmiştir. Nitel araştırma yöntemiyle yürütülen bu çalışmada, Smith’in heykel, baskıresim ve enstalasyon gibi farklı disiplinlerdeki eserleri, feminist estetik kavramları çerçevesinde analiz edilmiştir. Literatür taraması ve eser incelemesi yöntemleri kullanılarak, sanatçının eserlerinin biçimsel ve tematik özellikleri ortaya konulmuştur. Çalışmanın sonucunda, Kiki Smith’in eserlerinin, feminist estetik ile çağdaş sanat arasında bir köprü oluşturduğu, bireysel ve toplumsal kimlik temsillerine dair derin bir anlayış sunduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu çalışma, Smith’in sanatını daha geniş bir bağlamda değerlendirmeye olanak sağlarken, feminist estetiğin çağdaş sanat içindeki önemini vurgulamayı hedeflemektedir.

This study aims to examine the works of Kiki Smith, one of the prominent figures in contemporary art, within the framework of feminist aesthetics. The research investigates how Smith interprets and reflects themes such as body politics, gender, and human nature in her art. Her works question the representations of the female body in aesthetic, political, and social contexts while offering a critical perspective on social norms. The research problem focuses on how Smith’s art incorporates and expands the defining elements of feminist aesthetics. The study analyzes how material and form are used as feminist tools of expression in significant works such as Blood Pool, Pee Body, and Digestive System. It also explores how the artist integrates themes such as the natural world, mythology, and human fragility from a feminist perspective. Her printmaking, which holds a crucial place in her practice, is also examined through the lens of feminist aesthetics. Conducted through a qualitative research method, this study analyzes Smith’s works across various disciplines— such as sculpture, printmaking, and installation—within the conceptual framework of feminist aesthetics. Through literature review and visual analysis, the formal and thematic characteristics of the artist’s works have been revealed. As a result, it has been determined that Kiki Smith’s artworks form a bridge between feminist aesthetics and contemporary art, offering a profound understanding of individual and collective identity representations. This study aims to evaluate Smith’s artistic practice within a broader context while emphasizing the significance of feminist aesthetics in contemporary art.
