Types of GIS Education Methods and Applications

Abstract

This paper provides a brief overview of GIS education starting from 1970s. There is not a uniform accepted GIS education curricula for any part of GIS education worldwide. Today, each academic institution creates its own curriculum about the subject. Especially in Western world, GIS education has so many different ways of educating the needs of GIS world practitioners starting from K-12 to higher education. These different aplications include short courses and workshops, certificate programs, CBS sertifications, lisansing, GIS diploma (including masters and doctorate degrees). This paper presents past research on GIS education programs and shows how departments and institutions have developed such programs over the past two decades.
