Two Secrets Two Heroes: Ushun Qoca Ogli Segrek and Qozi Korpesh

Abstract

Important secrets are hidden from heroes in some Turkish epics and folk romances. Heroes usually learn the hidden secrets from the third persons (elderly women, children, peers etc.). These persons who are often injured from heroes. These secrets are usually about the first degree relatives have been imprisoned and unknown engaged and fiancés. Learned secrets activate the heroes. After learning the secrets, heroes want to go a journey. But, hero’s close relatives (father, mother etc.) want prevent the hero. Despite all efforts to block out the road, heroes not give up the idea. Their aim is to recover the prisoner close relatives and to find their fiancés. Prisoners are usually their fathers and big brothers. Events that allow the formation of secrets are node and the future heroes have to solve these nodes. In this study, two heroes (Ushun Qoca Ogli Segrek from “The Book of Dede Qorqud” and Qozi Korpesh from epic of “Qozi Korpesh and Bayan Sulu”) compared the context of the secrets hidden from them, out coming of these secrets and the behavior of heroes after learning these secrets. In other words, the basic qualities of heroes, the content of hidden secrets, the out coming of these secrets and their close relatives’ prevention efforts detailed in this comparison. The similarities between the two separate narratives about Segrek and Qozi Korpesh has shown once again how was brought in two separate narratives of similar items (theme, subject, motif etc.) by narrators. © 2011, Milli Folklor Dergisi.
