Özet

The Goktepe Wars, in which the Turkmens were forced to submit to Russian rule, contributed greatly to their acquisition of national consciousness and identity. Despite their painful results, the Goktepe Wars also served significantly to strengthen national identity and historical memory. The artist is known to have a function of changing and transforming the world. Especially at times of the disintegration of the nation and the state, any form of art plays a crucial role for a new vision of the World. The author, in a sense, is the conscience of the society that has been pushed to solitude. The Turkmen writer, Ata Govsudov, has similarly tried to mobilize and reconstruct a national spirit and a common identity by depicting the Goktepe War and its aftermath. This article focuses on Ata Govsudov's novel, Ferman in order to explore how elements of national culture are used in the reconstruction of national identity.
