Sabahattin Ali’nin İçimizdeki Şeytan romanında fikirlerin kokusu

Abstract

Bu çalışma Sabahattin Ali’nin İçimizdeki Şeytan romanını klasik yapısalcı incelemelerin ötesine taşıyarak bilişsel poetika, koku sosyolojisi ve bedenleşmiş biliş teorileri bağlamında disiplinler arası bir yaklaşımla incelemektedir. Çalışma, Geleneksel Aristotelesçi metafor anlayışını aşarak yozlaşma ve ahlaki çöküş gibi soyut ontolojik durumların, insan zihninde bedensel bir iğrenme ve kötü koku olarak somutlaştığını kavramsal metafor teorisi ışığında ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmanın merkezinde, Cumhuriyet döneminin halktan kopuk, pragmatist sahte aydın tipolojisinin bir incelemesi yer almakta, İsmet Şerif gibi karakterlerin savunduğu kütle psikolojisi gibi yüce fikirlerin, bedenlerinden sızan ifrazatlarla oluşturduğu semantik tezat üzerinden nasıl çürütüldüğü gösterilmektedir. Romanın başkarakteri olan Ömer’in yaşadığı trajedi ise metafiziksel bir kötülük yahut basit bir zaaf olarak değil, felsefedeki iradesizlik (akrasia) kavramıyla incelenmiş, eylemsizliğin ve çaresizliğin kokusuna dönüşen fenomenolojik bir ifrazat olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bachelard’ın mekân poetikası anlayışından hareketle bu entelektüel sahteliğin üretildiği loş mekânların boğucu labirentler olarak betimlendiği bir mekânsal patoloji tablosuna yer verilmiştir. Nihayetinde makale, yazarın romanda görülen Türk modernleşmesindeki lümpenliği mantıksal argümanların dışında, sezgisel tiksinti üzerinden eleştirdiğini tespit etmektedir. Sonuç itibarıyla çalışma romandaki “içimizdeki şeytan” imgesinin soyut bir bahaneden ibaret olduğunu; asıl trajedinin yalanın gizleyemediği, doğrudan bedenden ve mekândan sızan kokuşmuşluk ve iradesizlik olduğunu göstermektedir.

This study examines Sabahattin Ali's novel İçimizdeki Şeytan through an interdisciplinary approach that goes beyond classical structuralist analyses, considering cognitive poetics, the sociology of smell, and theories of embodied consciousness. Exceeding the traditional Aristotelian understanding of metaphor, the study reveals, in light of conceptual metaphor theory, how abstract ontological states such as corruption and moral decay are concretized in the human mind as bodily revulsion and foul odor. At the heart of this study is an examination of the pseudo-intellectual typology of the Republican era, detached from the people and pragmatic. It demonstrates how lofty ideas, such as the mass psychology championed by characters like İsmet Şerif, are refuted through the semantic contradictions created by the emanating secretions from their bodies. The tragedy experienced by Ömer, the protagonist of the novel, is not examined as a metaphysical evil or simple weakness, but rather through the philosophical concept of akrasia (lack of will), identified as a phenomenological secretion that transforms into the stench of inaction and helplessness. Based on Bachelard's understanding of spatial poetics, a spatial pathology painting is included in which the dim spaces where this intellectual falsity is produced are depicted as suffocating labyrinths. Ultimately, the article determines that the author criticizes the lumpenness in Turkish modernization seen in the novel through intuitive disgust, apart from logical arguments. As a result, the study shows that the image of the "devil within us" in the novel is just an abstract excuse; It proves that the real tragedy is the putrefaction and lack of will that cannot be hidden by lies, leaking directly from the body and space.
