The use of fossil fuels being one of the catalysts for climate change and environmental degradation has made energy transition a necessity on a global scale. In this energy transition, green hydrogen has come to the forefront in recent years due to its potential to replace fossil fuels without harming the environment. This study aims to investigate the role of green hydrogen in Türkiye’s energy future. In the first stage of the study, the relationship between natural gas consumption in Türkiye’s industrial sector and natural gas prices, industrial production index, and renewable energy installed capacity is analyzed with the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Testing approach for the period 1988–2024. Empirical findings indicate that there is a cointegration relationship between the variables and that prices and industrial production have a significant effect on natural gas consumption in the short run, while only industrial production has a significant effect in the long run. In the second stage of the study, industrial natural gas consumption is forecast up to 2053, the year of Türkiye’s net-zero emissions target, and the potential savings in both natural gas consumption and emissions over this period are calculated. Accordingly, if green hydrogen replaces 5% of natural gas in the industrial sector by 2030, approximately 5.1 million TEP of natural gas and 12.7 million tons of CO2 emissions would be saved. Furthermore, between 2030 and 2053, if the replacement rate reaches 10%, approximately 70.6 million TEP of natural gas and 176.6 million tons of CO2 emissions would be saved. Empirical findings indicate that green hydrogen, which is increasingly applied in the global energy transition, represents an important opportunity for Türkiye in terms of meeting net-zero emission targets. Steps taken to strengthen the green hydrogen ecosystem have the potential to contribute not only to combating climate change, but also to reducing fossil fuel dependency, strengthening energy supply security, and achieving sustainability goals.
