“Coğrafya kaderdir” üzerine

Abstract

Bu çalışma “coğrafya kaderdir” anlayışının tarihsel soy kütüğüne odaklanmaktadır. Çalışma söz konusu bu anlayışın küçümseyici (pejoratif) anlamının yanı sıra imperatif (buyurgan) bir anlama da sahip olduğunu ileri sürmektedir. Bu açıdan coğrafya kaderdir düşüncesinin coğrafyayı algılama ve tanımlama biçimimizle yakından bağlantılı olduğunu ve uzun bir maddi tarihsel temele sahip oldu-ğunu savunmaktadır. Bu mantıktan hareketle çalışma coğrafya kaderdir anlayışının coğrafi düşüncenin gelişim tarihi içindeki farklı ge-leneklerle olan ilişkisini incelemekte ve antik çağdan günümüze bunun sürekli nasıl yeniden üretildiğini ortaya koymaya çalışmaktadır. Bu bağlamda teolojik, astronomik ve kozmolojik coğrafya geleneklerinin ardından modern coğrafi düşünceyi şekillendiren mekanik, ekolojik ve evrimsel dünya görüşlerinin etkisi incelenmekte; söz konusu anlayışın doğa ve insanın (kültürün) ortak kavramsal çerçeve altında açıklanmasının ürünü olduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Bu haliyle de söz konusu fikrin idealist bir coğrafi düşünce biçimi olarak her türlü muhafazakâr siyasetin meşrulaştırıcı ve haklılaştırıcı bir aracı olarak işlev gördüğünü ileri sürmektedir.

This study focuses on the genealogy of the idea that “geography is destiny”. It claims that beside its pejorative meaning the idea has also an imperative meaning. In this regard, it defends considering geography as destiny is closely related with definition and imagi-nation of the geography itself and has long historical material ground. Departing from this logic, the study focuses on relationship between the idea and diverse traditions in historical development of geographical thought to put forward how this relationship has been reproduced from antique times to modern times. In this respect, after chasing contribution of theological, astrological and cosmo-logical traditions in classical age the study analyses role of mechanical, ecological and evolutionary world views in modern times and argues the aforementioned idea is an outcome of putting the nature and culture under same explanative umbrella. The study claims perceiving geography as destiny is product of idealistic geographical thought and functions as justification and legitimization tool for every kind of conservative politics.
