Guyot Marchant’ın ölüm dansı kitabındaki ağaç baskılarda canlılar ve ölüler arasındaki karşıtlıklar

Abstract

Toplumun en yüksek mertebesinden en düşüğüne, çeşitli sosyal statü ve meslekten insanların kendi ölü karşılıklarıyla yüzleştiği Ölüm Dansı teması, Ortaçağın popüler temalarından biri olmuştur. İlk kez Paris’teki Masumlar Mezarlığı’nın galeri duvarına resmedilen Ölüm Dansı, Parisli matbaacı Guyot Marchant’ın edisyonuyla birlikte toplumun her kesimine ulaşmış, temanın popülerleşmesi ve yayılmasına katkı sağlamıştır. Guyot Marchant’ın edisyonu aynı zamanda Ölüm Dansı’nın günümüze ulaşabilmiş en önemli görsel ve yazınsal temsillerinden biridir. Kitaptaki ağaç baskılarda ölüler, canlı karşılıklarının karşısına ayna imgesi olarak çıkarlar. Ölüm Dansı’nda didaktik bir unsur olarak kullanılan ayna metaforu, Geç Ortaçağ’da ortaya çıkan kişinin kendi ölümü kavramıyla tutarlılık içindedir. Kitapta yer alan şiirlerdeki didaktik tona karşılık, ağaç baskılarda daha alaycı ve karikatür bir hava hâkimdir. Şiirler ile ağaç baskılar arasındaki bu karşıtlığın yanı sıra, canlılar ile ölülerin temsil biçimlerinde de dikkat çekici karşıtlıklar söz konusudur. Bu makalede ilkel toplumlardan Geç Ortaçağa kadar ölüm imgesinin geçirdiği dönüşüme ve Ölüm Dansı temasının ortaya çıkışına değindikten sonra söz konusu karşıtlıklar ele alınacak, kitaptaki ayna metaforundan bahsedilecektir.

Danse Macabre depicting confrontation of all people of all social estates, from the highest to the lowest of the social ranks, with their dead counterparts was one of the popular medieval themes. First painted on a charnel wall of Cimetiére des Innocents in Paris, Danse Macabre became popular and available to people from all walks of life thanks to Guyot Marchant’s printed edition. His edition is also one of the most important visual and textual representations of Danse Macabre today. The purpose of the research paper is to discuss these contrasts in “Danse Macabre”. It also aims to talk about the role and contribution of the metaphor of mirror to these contrasts and to find out impacts of Danse Macabre theme to the way of perceiving death in the Late Middle Ages. For this purpose, the paper will firstly talk about transformation of the image of death starting from the primitive societies until the Late Medieval period and the origins of Danse Macabre theme. Later it will discuss the contrasts mentioned above and explore the metaphor of mirror. As a result of the paper, it’s been found that unlike the didactic tone of the poems lying beneath the woodcuts, the images are dominated by mockery and caricature features. In addition to the contrast between the textual and graphic representations, it has also been found that there are striking contrasts in the way of depictions of the living and the dead. Furthermore, the dead appear as a mirror image to their living counterparts in the woodcuts of the book. It’s been concluded that the metaphor of mirror used as a didactic element in Marchant’s book is consistent with the idea of one’s own death in the Late Medieval period.
