Art directing lesson as a collobrative learning practice

Abstract

In the Art Direction course, students connect with various art disciplines, including painting, graphic design, cinema, photography, literature, architecture, and theater. The course begins with script and textual work, progressing through sketches, drafts, and storyboards to visual designs. As part of the course, architectural spaces are converted into cinematic environments through photography and film shoots, followed by editing, post-production, and film screenings. A key research question explores the process of transforming architectural spaces into cinematic ones and integrating this transformation into the course content. Another inquiry examines the impact of the course on both students and instructors, focusing on how it fosters growth and adaptation. During the pandemic, the newly established Graphic Arts Department was allocated a building initially designed for a different purpose. This study investigates how the challenges of converting this building into functional workshop spaces were creatively addressed to establish dynamic and productive environments. Using the A/r/tography method, this research examines the processes of creation, inquiry, and application in the Art Direction course from the perspectives of both students and instructors.

Sanat Yönetmenliği dersi; Güzel Sanatlar ve İletişim Fakülteleri’nde; Sinema, Grafik, İletişim Tasarım, Görsel İletişim ve Tasarım bölümlerinde yürütülen teorik ve uygulamalı bir derstir. Bu derste öğrenciler, resim, grafik, sinema, fotoğraf, edebiyat, mimari, tiyatro gibi sanat disiplinleri ile ilişki kurabilmektedir. Sanat Yönetmenliği dersi senaryo ve metinsel bir çalışma ile başlayıp; eskizler, taslaklar, storyboardlar, görsel tasarımlarla süreç devam etmektedir. Mimari mekânların sinemasal mekâna dönüşmesi, fotoğraf ve film çekimlerinin yapılması, kurgu, post-prodüksiyon ve filmlerin gösterim süreçleriyle tamamlanmaktadır. Araştırma problemlerinden biri, mimari mekânların nasıl sinematik mekânlara dönüştürüldüğü ve bu dönüşümün ders içeriğinin nasıl bir parçası haline geldiğidir. Bir diğer sorgulama ise ders içeriğinin hem öğrencileri hem de eğitmenleri nasıl dönüştürebildiğidir. Pandemi döneminde aktif hale gelen ve ilk öğrencilerini alan Grafik Sanatlar Bölümüne tahsis edilen, farklı bir amaçla inşa edilmiş binanın atölyelere uygun olarak dönüştürülme süreçlerinin olumsuz etkilerinin nasıl yaratıcı bir süreçle yaşama ve üretme alanlarına çevrilebileceği ise çalışmanın ana sorgulamalarından bir diğeridir. Tüm bu sorgulamalar için uygun bir alan sağladığına inanılan Sanat yönetmenliği dersinde gerçekleşen yeni sorgulama, yaratım ve uygulama süreçlerinin öğrenciler ve ders yürütücüleri açısından nasıl gerçekleştiğinin A/r/tografi yöntemi kullanılarak araştırılması bu çalışmanın içeriğini oluşturmaktadır.
